The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has played a pivotal role in authenticating a selection of rare and storied gems ahead of Christie’s Magnificent Jewels auction, slated for June 17 in New York. Among the centerpieces of this high-profile event is a remarkable 10.38-carat Fancy Purple-Pink diamond, famously known as the Marie-Thérèse Pink—a gemstone steeped in royal history and unmatched in rarity.
Linked to Queen Marie-Antoinette of France and later to her daughter, Duchess Marie-Thérèse of Angoulême, this vivid pinkish-purple stone boasts a modified brilliant kite cut and extraordinary provenance. Believed to have originated from India—one of the earliest sources of colored diamonds—the gem dates back to the mid-18th century. It is estimated to fetch between $3 million and $5 million, reflecting both its gemological distinction and regal lineage.
“The Marie-Thérèse Pink is a fusion of natural rarity and historical resonance,” said Tom Moses, GIA Executive Vice President and Chief Laboratory and Research Officer. “Our comprehensive evaluation confirmed the diamond’s natural color origin and internal features, ensuring that its story is preserved with scientific accuracy.”
The GIA’s involvement extends beyond this singular masterpiece. The institute has assessed more than 30 exceptional jewels for the auction, including:
-
A 60-carat unmounted diamond, distinguished by its flawless symmetry and exceptional clarity
-
A diamond pendant necklace featuring motifs inspired by classical European craftsmanship
This auction arrives at a time when global interest in coloured diamonds is surging, particularly with the closure of historic sources like Australia’s Argyle Mine. As a result, gems like the Marie-Thérèse Pink stand not only as marvels of geology and artistry, but as irreplaceable artifacts of human history.
Through GIA’s meticulous grading and documentation, these treasures are given a scientific and historical context that deepens their significance—bridging the worlds of gemology, legacy, and luxury.
