GJEPC Champions Green Revolution in Jewellery Trade on World Environment Day

On the occasion of World Environment Day, the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) reaffirmed its commitment to environmental stewardship by spotlighting its eco-conscious initiatives at the India International Jewellery Show (IIJS). Recognized as one of the top two B2B trade fairs globally in the gem and jewellery sector, IIJS is now also emerging as a model for sustainable event practices.

Aligning with this year’s theme—“Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience”—GJEPC has been proactive in embedding green values into the fabric of its exhibitions, aiming not just for industry excellence but for ecological responsibility.

“Sustainability is no longer optional—it’s a moral obligation,” said GJEPC Chairman Kirit Bhansali. “We are infusing every facet of our exhibitions with environmentally conscious planning. Through collaborations with green vendors and proactive carbon offsetting, we aim to lead the industry into a cleaner, more responsible future.”

Sustainability in Action at IIJS

IIJS has adopted a range of innovative measures designed to minimize environmental impact while promoting awareness among industry stakeholders:

  • Modular, Reusable Stalls: Booths are constructed with eco-friendly materials, slashing construction waste and emissions.

  • 100% Renewable Energy: The event runs entirely on clean energy, reducing reliance on traditional power sources.

  • “One Earth” Tree Plantation Drive: A tree is planted for every registered visitor. To date, over 100,000 trees have been planted.

  • Eco-Friendly Branding Materials: Fabric banners and non-toxic inks replace harmful PVC flexes and chemical-laden printing.

  • Digital Innovations: Plastic badges are replaced with digital credentials and facial recognition systems to boost sustainability and security.

  • Reusable Show Bags & Cutlery: A zero-waste philosophy extends to all promotional and catering materials.

  • Green Mobility: Electric shuttle buses and metro usage are actively promoted to cut emissions from event transportation.

  • Sustainable Structures: Even large event installations are now made with durable, reusable, low-impact materials.

  • Awareness Building: Education sessions on sustainability help exhibitors and visitors adopt greener practices beyond the show floor.

By embedding green thinking into its events, GJEPC is setting new benchmarks for responsible trade exhibitions. The council is calling on the wider gem and jewellery community to follow suit and help transform the industry into a catalyst for environmental progress.

This World Environment Day, GJEPC’s message is clear: Sustainable luxury is the future.
