Christie's to Auction Largest Fancy Blue Diamond Ever Offered

Christie’s has announced the sale of the largest fancy blue diamond ever to appear at auction, further strengthening interest in rare colored diamonds among global collectors and investors.

The exceptional gemstone, named the Azure Blue, weighs 31.62 carats and will headline the auction house’s Magnificent Jewels sale scheduled to take place in New York on June 9. The pear-shaped diamond has been graded by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) as Fancy Blue and is also classified as potentially internally flawless.

Rare Blue Diamond Expected to Draw Global Attention

Christie’s has placed an estimated value of between $6.5 million and $8.5 million on the stone. According to the auction house, diamonds of this size, clarity and natural blue coloration are considered exceptionally rare within the global gemstone market.

The auction announcement described the Azure Blue as one of the most important fancy blue diamonds to reach the market in recent years, highlighting the scarcity of high-quality blue diamonds of substantial size.

Comparison With the Golconda Blue

The upcoming offering follows another notable blue diamond appearance earlier this year when Christie’s prepared to auction the 23.24-carat Golconda Blue in Geneva. That diamond carried a significantly higher estimate of $35 million to $50 million due to its Fancy Vivid Blue grading, which reflects a deeper and more intense color saturation.

However, the Golconda Blue was withdrawn from the sale shortly before the auction at the request of the consignor.

Growing Demand for Exceptional Colored Diamonds

Claibourne Poindexter stated that Christie’s is honored to present the historic gemstone to a new generation of collectors, emphasizing its importance as the largest Fancy Blue diamond ever offered at auction.

Rare colored diamonds, particularly blue stones, continue to attract strong demand from high-net-worth buyers due to their limited availability, investment appeal and growing prominence in international jewellery auctions.
