American Gem Society Introduces ACGA Credential to Elevate Appraisal Standards

The American Gem Society has unveiled a new professional designation—the Advanced Certified Gemologist Appraiser (ACGA)—designed to enhance expertise and set higher standards in gem and jewelry appraisal.

This newly launched credential is now accessible to all eligible AGS members and represents a significant step forward in strengthening professional credibility within the appraisal community. According to Wade Abel, Director of Education and Gemology at AGS, the ACGA program is the result of continuous member feedback and reflects the evolving demands of the industry.

To qualify for the ACGA title, candidates must meet a series of rigorous criteria. These include holding the Certified Gemologist Appraiser (CGA) designation for at least three years, demonstrating substantial appraisal experience, and completing training in the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP). Additionally, applicants must maintain an Accredited Gem Lab, adhere to strict ethical guidelines, and complete annual recertification requirements.

Beyond certification, AGS is also equipping ACGA holders with promotional resources to help them showcase their advanced qualifications in the marketplace.

Describing the initiative, Abel emphasized that the ACGA designation represents a modern evolution in appraisal credentialing. He noted that it places AGS professionals among the most highly qualified appraisers in the field, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to excellence and industry leadership.

With this launch, the American Gem Society continues to strengthen its role in advancing professionalism, transparency, and trust in the global gem and jewelry sector.
