Businesses in Dundee have been eagerly awaiting the new V&A Museum of Design, which finally opened its doors yesterday with a promise to provide economy boosting tourism opportunities.
The £80.1m building, a striking architectural icon designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, is expected to attract 500,000 visitors in its opening year and is guaranteed to transform perceptions of Dundee locally, nationally and globally.
This outside attention is intended to cement the city as a powerhouse of the Scottish economy, and the benefits of such an influx of tourism are much welcomed by Houlden Member, Derek Little, director of Walker Luxury Jeweller – located in the heart of the city’s Union Street.
“It’s predicted that 350,000 people will visit the museum on a yearly basis and Dundee will be £11 million better off during its first year, which is fantastic for us retailers,” says Derek Little.
“Like our jewellery and timepieces, the V&A is beautiful, stylish and modern, but also like Walker Luxury Jeweller – its history and heritage is undeniable.”
