GSI Uncovers Undisclosed Lab-Grown Diamonds in Brown Diamond Jewellery

Gemological Science International (GSI) has identified undisclosed lab-grown diamonds (LGDs) embedded within jewellery pieces featuring natural brown diamonds — a segment currently seeing growing demand for its warm, earthy appeal and affordability.

The detection was made through a series of sophisticated analytical techniques, including Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), DiamondView imaging, and Raman spectroscopy conducted under liquid nitrogen cooling. GSI experts found that multiple jewellery items contained both natural and synthetic stones, spanning a range of shades from near-colourless with light brown tints to deep, fancy dark browns.

This discovery adds to GSI’s expanding body of research on coloured lab-grown diamonds, which reveals how advanced synthesis processes can mimic the subtle tones of natural stones with increasing precision. The organisation emphasised that rigorous testing and full disclosure remain crucial for maintaining transparency across the diamond trade.

“As natural brown diamonds continue to capture consumer interest, it’s vital to uphold the integrity of this category,” noted Debbie Azar, GSI President and Co-Founder. “Through advanced gemmological science, we aim to protect both the industry and the consumer by ensuring authenticity, trust, and clarity in every transaction.”

GSI’s findings serve as a timely reminder of the importance of verification and responsible sourcing as the line between natural and lab-grown gems becomes ever more refined.
