Voluntary HUID-Based Hallmarking for Silver Jewellery Begins September

Starting 1 September 2025, silver jewellery and articles in India can be hallmarked with a Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) code on a voluntary basis, as announced by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution.

With this rollout, buyers will now have the ability to verify the authenticity of their silver purchases through the BIS Care App, which will provide key details including purity, article type, date of hallmarking, jeweller’s registration, and the assaying centre involved.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), which had first permitted voluntary hallmarking for silver in 2005, has updated its framework by introducing IS 2112:2025 in place of the earlier IS 2112:2014. The new standard prescribes three elements for the hallmark:

  • The BIS Standard Mark with the word “SILVER”

  • The purity grade

  • A unique HUID code

Two additional purity grades—958 and 999—have also been introduced, raising the total to seven.

Currently, hallmarking is carried out by 230 BIS-recognised Assaying and Hallmarking Centres across 87 districts. In FY 2024–25 alone, over 32 lakh silver jewellery articles were hallmarked, underscoring the rising demand for verified purity in the category.

To ensure industry readiness, BIS convened a stakeholder meeting on 7 August 2025, engaging jewellers, hallmarking centres, and consumer groups. Parallelly, awareness drives are underway through BIS branches and digital outreach to familiarise the public with the system.

The move is expected to bolster consumer confidence, reduce malpractice, and bring silver jewellery transactions on par with the transparent framework already in place for gold hallmarking.
